Audi is bringing its three-motor electric SUV, the e-tron S and e-tron S Sportback, to the United States, with prices starting at $84,800.

The Audi e-tron has been on the market for some time and has made a name for itself in a number of markets.

It had a rocky start in the United States, but following a price decrease and a range expansion, it's doing much better this year.

Audi is now planning to add the e-tron S and its Sportback variant to its range.

Last year, the German carmaker introduced the vehicle as "the world's first mass-produced electric automobile with three motors":

Audi's e-offensive is pushing forward in a systematic manner: As S variants, the Audi e-tron and Audi e-tron Sportback become more nimble, sharper, and dynamic. The three electric motors, two of which are on the back axle, produce 370 kW of boost power and 973 Nm (717.6 lb-ft) of torque when combined. The two totally electric vehicles can reach 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 4.5 seconds as a result of this. The intelligent driving control takes vehicle safety, and especially dynamic handling, to new heights: There's also electric torque vectoring with active and totally variable torque distribution on the rear axle, in addition to the electric all-wheel drive.

The company began delivering the electric vehicle in Europe earlier this year and is now bringing it to the United States.

The e-tron S doesn't just feature a more powerful engine than the original e-tron. It's also available in a slightly larger size:

The e-tron S is the only Audi “S” model with wider bodywork than the basic model, being nearly two inches wider than the e-tron and e-tron Sportback variants. They stand out from other e-tron models thanks to their bold curves and big, expressive air curtains on the front and back bumpers. Each front fender is 0.9” wider than previous e-tron models; basic 20” wheels (9.0” wide) with all-season tyres are tucked into each corner; the Black Optic package includes 21” and 22” wheels with summer tyres (both optional wheel packages are 10.5” wide).

Because of the slightly larger form factor, the range is slightly shorter. The EPA estimates that the e-tron S will have a range of 208 miles and the e-tron Sportback S will have a range of 212 miles with the standard wheel/tire combination.

It will start at just under $85,000:

                                                   Premium Plus         Prestige
Audi e-tron S                                      $84,800          $89,800
Audi e-tron S Sportback                   $87,400          $92,400

The first vehicles are expected to arrive in dealerships in the United States in the fall.

Here are all the specifics about the Audi e-tron S's introduction in the United States:

Audi e-tron S and e-tron S Sportback versions will be available in the United States in the fall of 2022.

  • All-electric three-motor vehicle With up to 496 horsepower and 718 lb-ft of torque, the Audi e-tron S and e-tron S Sportback will be available in the United States this fall.
  • For perfect torque distribution and handling, an innovative design drives the rear wheels with separate motors.
  • For drivers seeking an exciting driving experience with zero direct emissions, the first completely electric Audi S models feature the perfect blend of performance, design, and luxury.

17 AUGUST 2021, HERNDON, VA – The 2022 Audi e-tron S and e-tron S Sportback, which combine technology, craftsmanship, and performance with intentional advancements, will arrive in the United States this autumn, expanding Audi's line of all-electric performance vehicles.

Audi e-tron S models have two electric motors on the rear axle and one on the front axle, allowing them to generate 496 horsepower and 718 lb-ft of torque in boost mode for up to eight seconds. Because the two rear motors are independent of one another, they can work with pinpoint accuracy, allowing the driver to power out of curves with confidence thanks to torque vectoring. The front motor is turned off in regular driving until it is required.

When needed, the front motor delivers power, improves traction, and benefits the driver with brake-based torque vectoring, which can activate within milliseconds of the e-tron S sensing wheel slip. This gives you confidence when it comes to both performance driving and driving in bad weather.

Electric quattro® can prioritise how power is transferred to the rear wheels in Dynamic mode, allowing the driver to perform controlled drifts. Safely. On a course that isn't open to the public. This component is required by our legal staff.

That thrill appears to be there.

Digital Matrix LED headlights are available as an option on both the e-tron S and e-tron S Sportback – another world first in mass production that Audi announced with the e-tron Sportback in the fall of 2019. Each light is divided into 1.3 million pixels and can be adjusted with extreme precision, opening up a slew of new possibilities. While drivers can choose from five different welcome and exit illumination visuals, additional capabilities such as on-road lane markers and lightbeams that can dive around or below other cars may be unlocked when U.S. regulations allow. LED headlights with a matrix style are standard.

Smart.

Both e-tron S variants are well-equipped, with a 12.3” virtual cockpit and a dual-screen MMI display – 10.1” upper and 8.6” lower – as standard. Technology is available in large quantities, having the following features:

  • Google's 3D satellite navigation imagery combined with the e-tron route planner has been updated.
  • Predictive Traffic Light Data that can provide speed suggestions and time to green in order to sustain "green waves."
  • All major tolling agencies in the United States are interoperable with the integrated toll module fitted into the rearview mirror.
  • Wi-Fi for up to eight connected devices powered by LTE in the vehicle (requires subscription)
  • camera from above
  • Recognize traffic signs
  • Audi Active Lane Assist with Turn Assist is a feature that helps you stay in your lane
  • Pre-sense front Audi
  • Cruise assistance that adapts
  • Signal booster for Audi phonebox

Power soft-closing doors, dual-pane acoustic front side windows, intersection assist, and a head-up display are all available as options. Fine ash wood trim and 12-way diamond-stitched Valcona leather sport seats are standard on the inside. Outboard rear Valcona leather seats with heating are also included.

Ventilation, massaging, passenger-side memory capabilities, and Valcona and Milano leather combination seating surfaces are included in the optional front Individual Contour Seat Package.

Torque

The e-tron S's single front and dual rear asynchronous motors provide a near-instant 429 horsepower and 596 lb-ft of torque in standard driving mode. In boost mode, those figures grow to 496 horsepower and a whopping 718 lb-ft of torque, enabling for a 0-60 mph time of just 4.3 seconds.

A 95 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, located low in the chassis for better handling, powers the three motors. Dual charging connections make it simple for the driver to charge up to 150 kW at a Level 3 DC public fast charger, which can offer a 5-80% charge in under 30 minutes. The e-tron S comes with a 9.6 kW AC Level 2 charger as standard, and Qmerit offers white-glove concierge home installation services for a home charger installation.

A standard adaptive air suspension aids performance. The 15.7” front brake callipers are clamped down by upgraded six-piston front brake callipers painted Dynamic Orange. The towing kit on e-tron S versions increases the rated towing capacity to 3,300 lb.

With the standard wheel/tire package, the EPA estimates a driving range of 208 miles for the e-tron S and 212 miles for the e-tron Sportback S.

The Audi e-tron S and e-tron S Sportback are built in a certified carbon-neutral factory in Brussels, Belgium, and will be available for European markets in mid-2020. They join the e-tron and e-tron Sportback models, which had their strongest sales in the first half of 2021 in the United States, and are joined by the all-new e-tron GT and approaching Q4 e-tron model lines.

Audi plans to have the most fully electric cars of any automaker in the United States by the end of 2021. Audi wants to electrify nearly 30% of its U.S. model lineup by 2025, including plug-in hybrids, and become net CO2-neutral globally by 2050.
