Tesla Model Y rumour with 400-mile range denied

After filing for new versions of the electric SUV to be made at Gigafactory Shanghai, there are rumours of a Tesla Model Y with a range of 400 miles.

The rumours have been greatly overstated.

Tesla filed paperwork with the Chinese government this week to create five more versions of the Model Y at the Gigafactory Shanghai, as we previously reported.

According to a claim made by the Australian website The Driven, one of those versions will have a "ultra long range" of 640 kilometres (398 miles) on a single charge.

Several other publications twisted the storey to claim that Tesla is about to deliver a Model Y with a 400-mile range.

That figure is misleading because it is based on the NEDC driving cycle, which is used in the Chinese market.

In most normal driving conditions, it is generally truly representative of real-world range.

Tesla uses the WLTP standard in Europe, and the Model Y Dual Motor Long Range has a range of 505 kilometres (314 miles) on a single charge.

The Model Y Dual Motor Long Range has a range of 326 miles (525 kilometres) according to the EPA driving cycle used in the United States.

According to the NEDC standard, Tesla's longest-range version of the Model Y, Long Range AWD, has a range of 594 km (369 miles) in China.

Based on that information, if the new Model Y meets the NEDC standard by 46 kilometres, it should have a longer range, but nowhere near the 640 kilometres or 400 miles of real-world driving range.

In my opinion, it should have a real-world range of between 525 and 535 kilometres (325 to 332-miles), which is about the same as the EPA range for the current Model Y in the United States.

You may ignore reports that the new Model Y will have a range of 400 miles.

For the time being, that title is reserved for the Model S.

It will be interesting to see what Tesla can do with the upcoming Model Y, which will use 4680 cells and a structural battery pack produced at the Supercharger stations in Berlin and Texas.

Tesla is likely to go much more than 300 miles, but you never know.
