Tesla confirms new Cybertruck prototypes and expresses optimism about the company timeline

Tesla has provided an update on the Cybertruck, showing the presence of new prototypes and express confidence about the production timeline.

Tesla's most anticipated product, the Cybertruck, has been postponed until "late 2022," creating disappointment among customers.

Tesla was asked to provide an update on the electric pickup truck at its Q3 2021 earnings call.

Tesla's Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, Lars Moravy, confirmed that "a number of alpha Cybertruck prototypes" have been created:

"As you may have seen on social media recently, we've created a number of alphas that we're now testing to further refine the design."

Moravy is referring to the new Cybertruck prototype, which was discovered earlier this week in California.

The engineer stated that it has rear steering and suggested at other "less visible improvements":

“And although those highlight a few important changes, such as rear steering, there are also a number of minor or less visible upgrades, with the product remaining generally true to the original idea. We'll keep working on the product while it's still in beta, with the goal of launching it next year."

It's worth noting that Moravy stated that the car would debut "next year."

Tesla has stopped stating that the electric pickup truck will arrive "late" next year and has instead shifted its focus to the vehicle arriving after the Model Y at the Gigafactory Texas.

In a letter to shareholders sent out yesterday, the automaker stated:

"We're making progress on building infrastructure Cybertruck, which is scheduled to happen for Austin production after Model Y."

Tesla plans to begin Model Y production at the Gigafactory Texas by the end of the year. Elon Musk, who was not on the call yesterday, has previously stated that Tesla will not shift to Cybertruck production until the new facility is able to ramp up Model Y production.

As the CEO admits, projecting a production ramp is difficult, therefore the Cybertruck's release date could still be in late 2022.
